To get children to discover activities and hobbies other than video games, it is important that parents begin working with them as early as possible. One great idea is the help them develop a love of wood projects for kids. When working with children the best thing to do in the beginning is to start with simple projects.
Simple Wood Birdhouse
This is a great project because the child can see the result and enjoy it daily as soon as they finish. It takes a very short time in order to complete this project from beginning to end. This is important for many children because they simply lack the attention span of an adult.
This project only requires 5 pieces of wood. Two pieces will be for the angled roof. Two more pieces will be for the body. And then there will be a round piece which is so the birds have something to put their feet on.
All this project takes is that two square pieces of wood are cut and they will be placed at an angle with the corners pointing up and down. A hole will be drilled into one of the pieces that is large enough for a bird to put its head through.
A smaller hole will be made toward the bottom of both square pieces of wood. This will be used to place the round stick that is used for the birds to stand on. Then there is simply making the two pieces of wood for the roof of the birdhouse.
This project can be completed in a very short amount of time. Much of the work can be done by the child with simple instructions from their parent. Once completed, it can be hung outside and the child can not only view their work daily, but they can see the birds that come there to play and sing.
Small Bench
This is another great project as it’s simple and it requires only a few working parts and it’s something that the child can do with basic instructions from their parent. All this project takes is a rectangle piece of wood large enough to be used as a bench seat along with 4 pegs suitable as legs for the bench. A child can help with measuring out the bench seat and with sanding and preparing it to receive its legs.
They can watch as the parent cuts the legs and again they can help with sanding and staining and preparing the legs to be placed onto the seat. This is another project that takes a short period of time so that the child can remain interested and have fun. It is also a project that they can view and even use themselves daily either in their room or just outside of the house.
When friends come over they can point out that they made the bird house and bench which will be a great source of pride for them. These wood projects for kids are often very meaningful for them. Often it will form memories that will remain a lifetime.
